View Full →The 2026 tournament is the first to feature 48 teams, up from 32. It introduces a brand-new knockout round and runs across 16 host cities in the United States, Mexico, and Canada. Here is exactly how the expanded format works, from the group stage to the final.
The Group Stage: 12 Groups of 4
The 48 teams are split into 12 groups of 4 (Groups A through L). Each team plays the other three teams in its group once, for a total of 72 group-stage matches. The top two teams from every group advance automatically, joined by the 8 best third-placed teams. That makes 32 teams who reach the knockout stage.
This is the big change from previous tournaments: with 8 third-placed teams qualifying, finishing third in your group is no longer an automatic exit. A strong third place can still go all the way.
The New Round of 32
For the first time, the knockout stage begins with a Round of 32 instead of a Round of 16. The 32 qualified teams play 16 single-elimination matches. From there the format is familiar: Round of 16 (8 matches), Quarterfinals (4 matches), Semifinals (2 matches), and the Final. There is also a third-place playoff between the two losing semifinalists.
104 Matches in Total
The expanded format means 104 matches in all: 72 in the group stage, then 16 in the Round of 32, 8 in the Round of 16, 4 Quarterfinals, 2 Semifinals, the third-place playoff, and the Final. The tournament runs from June 11 to July 19, 2026, making it the longest and largest edition ever played.
