How the Bracket Works

The 2026 World Cup features a new format with 48 teams divided into 12 groups of 4. After the group stage:

  • 24 teams advance directly (top 2 from each group)
  • 8 teams advance as best third-place finishers
  • Round of 32 → Round of 16 → Quarterfinals → Semifinals → Final
  • All knockout matches are single elimination

32 teams advance to the knockout stage: the top 2 from each of the 12 groups (24 teams) plus the 8 best third-place finishers.

The final will be held at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, USA on July 19, 2026.

If tied after 90 minutes, the match goes to 30 minutes of extra time. If still tied, the winner is decided by penalty shootout.

Group winners face third-place qualifiers, while group runners-up face each other. The bracket is structured so teams from the same group can't meet until later rounds.

The Round of 32 begins June 28, 2026, followed by Round of 16 (July 3-6), Quarterfinals (July 9-10), Semifinals (July 13-14), Third Place (July 18), and Final (July 19).
