Third-Place Qualification Rules

In the expanded 48-team format, 8 of the 12 third-place teams advance to the Round of 32. Here's how they're determined:

Ranking Criteria (in order)

  1. Points – Most points earned in 3 group matches
  2. Goal Difference – Goals scored minus goals conceded
  3. Goals Scored – Total goals scored
  4. Fair Play Score – Fewest yellow/red cards
  5. FIFA World Ranking – Higher-ranked team advances

Status Meanings

Safe Ranks 1-6 – Very likely to qualify
On the Bubble Ranks 7-9 – Could go either way
At Risk Ranks 10-12 – Needs help to qualify

Important Notes

  • Scenarios become available after Matchday 2 (when teams have played 2 games)
  • A team with 4 points could still be eliminated if others have 4+ points with better tiebreakers
  • The calculator updates in real-time as matches are played
  • Final rankings are confirmed only after all 72 group stage matches complete
